  • Diabetic Retinopathy treatment and its importance

Diabetic retinopathy develops when the blood vessels in the retina are damaged by the increased blood sugar levels in the blood. You may require immediate surgical care whether you have proliferative diabetic retinopathy or macular edema. Based on the issues that you are facing, your ophthalmologist may suggest different solutions. The different solutions are listed below:

Focal Photocoagulation:  Such laser treatment will interrupt or delay the blood and fluid leakage inside the eye is also known as focal laser therapy. The procedure is provided via laser burns of leakage from dysfunctional blood vessels.

Focus laser treatment is usually done in a single sitting with your eye surgeon.

Photocoagulation pan-retinal: This laser procedure, which is also known as the scatter laser therapy will decrease the irregular vessels in your eyes. Intermittent laser burns are administered to the areas of the eye away from the macula. Burning refers to an irregular depletion in the fresh blood vessels.

  • Vitrectomy: This operation uses a small incision in your eye to remove blood and scar tissue from the center of the eye. This is performed with local or general anaesthesia in a surgical facility or hospital.
  • IntraVitreous Injection: Vitreous injection can be recommended by your ophthalmologist. These medications called VEGF inhibitors can help to stop the development of new blood vessels and block the effects of growth signals sent by the body to generate new blood vessels.

This can be prescribed by the doctor as stand-alone medication or paired with pan-retinal photocoagulation. Although anti-VEGF therapy trials are positive for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, this technique is still not common.

You may be scared to go under the knife and delay the diabetic retinopathy, but this is not a solution. Diabetes is a lifelong disease, which makes it likely to inflict potential retinal impairment and vision loss.

You may require routine eye checks even after diabetic retinopathy treatment. Further treatment may be recommended at some point.

Diabetic retinopathy needs surgical care if:

  • The middle (macula) of the retina has been damaged.
  • New blood vessels have begun to appear abnormally. (This is known as retinopathy proliferation.)
  • Serious traction to the retina leading to Retinal detachment.

Diabetic retinopathy cannot be cured completly. However, this treatment helps in preventing, delaying, or reducing vision loss. The quicker the issue is detected the faster it can be prevented and normal vision can also be restored.
