  • ALL ABOUT RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY

A detached retina is an alarming situation which may arise due to a number of reasons. Your retina may be peeled off from the supporting tissue. It is an medical emergency and patients with detached retina can experience photopsia or peripheral vision loss and sometimes complete loss of vision. Retinal detachment can affect the entire eyesight and in some cases, retinal detachment surgery may also be required to fix the issue

Retinal detachment surgery methods:

Scroll below to find out the different methods employed by the ophthalmologist to perform the retinal detachment surgery

  • Pneumatic Retinopexy: Injecting in the eye air or gas. The physician injects a bubble of air or gas into the middle (a cavity of the gel) of the eye during this operation, termed Pneumatic Retinopexy. If located right, the bubble moves the retinal region surrounding the defect or void against the eye’s surface and prevents the fluid movement through the retinal field. Your doctor will also use cryopexy to repair your retinal break during the procedure.

It may take you many days to keep your head in a certain location and maintain the bubble correctly. Eventually, the bubble reabsorbs itself.

  • Scleral Buckling: The coats of Eyeball are indented involves a silicone material sewed (suturing) over the affected area on to the white of the eye(also called as sclera). This treatment works on the eyewall and alleviates the stress that is induced by the Vitreous gel pull on the retina. A scleral bump is produced across the whole eye, over the areas of tears/holes. The buckle is positioned so that your vision is not blocked, and usually is permanently placed.
  • Vitrectomy: Drainage and replacement of the fluid behind the retina which is causing retinal detachment is done endoscopically. The surgeon extracts the vitreous along with repair of retinal tears and holes, and the process is known as a vitrectomy (via-TREK-to-me). After the surgery gel in the eye is replaced by eiher Injected air, gas, or silicone oil to flatten the retina.

Laser procedure: The eye specialist puts anesthetic eye drops. The laser is then focused on the retinal or limited range. A laser beam is directed to the eye by the surgeon. The laser burns through the retinal scratch, which creates the scarring that usually “sews” the retina to the base tissue. The procedure prevents fluids from passing under the retina, which could result in the detachment, with retinal tears.

Your surgeon can use a topical steroid to prevent inflammation following this relatively painless procedure. He or she would prescribe that you rest for the first few days and that you must not work hard so that eye be healed.
